What is design? It is not something that sits on a shelf ,waiting to be taken down .Neither is nature .Both are ever-present manifestations of a greater unity .Design is the same ,basically, in all fields, although the tools and language are different .Whether it’s music, writing ,architecture or dance, the most important aspect is the energy of life itself. The thing that’s important is not something called design; it’s how you live,it’s life itself .Design really comes from that .You cannot separate what you do from your life .
This truth can be seen in the work of primitives .They did not set out to ‘design’; rather, this shelters they built ,the crops they planted, the tools they crafted and the modes of communication they employed were direct responses to the climate ,topography and resources that defined their communities .Today ,we put their pottery in museums and call it art; we study their strategies of protection and call it architecture; we find inspiration in their agricultural practices for form and pattern in landscape design . The intimate assimilation of given conditions produced works of balance ,rhythm and scale that please our contemporary senses because they reveal the governing efficiency and orders of nature .The reliance on functionality produced the purity perceived as art-beauty is the result ,not a preconception .Today’s technology can also be brought into the production of powerful experiences if one can see the determining factors clearly and respond with unadorned honesty.
Yet it is dangerous to be a slave to rationality. Life is fun and shoud be celebrated. One has to be open to the unexpected and the anserious .Although it seems obvious ,many ignore the inspirational fortitude of love-love of family ,love of place .When you are passionate , somethings is bound to happen .If you do something simply for money or to make a big splash , that’s no basis form which to move forwards .I am motivated by the adventure inherent in seeking out the possibilities of life ,and that includes a sense of lightness and spontaneity that frees one from sterile rules and procedures .The strongest artists and designers ,such as the great poet Rilke ,search for the mystery of who we are ;they call it being .The best work comes from that search. The mystical dimension joins with our faculties to prepare us for further growth.
